Why Don't Demons Leave Automatically?
Many Christians operate under the assumption that demons have to leave them when they deal with the sin that invited them in. Sometimes that does happen but it is not a given and the unwelcome guest need to get kicked out of the house.
Have you ever had company that comes for a visit and will not leave on their own? It can lead to you having to take steps to kick them out. It can be a similar situation in the demonic realm when there are spirits in a person and they are just expected to go!
A few years back I had occasion to minister to a man who was a worship leader at his church. Prior to his salvation, he had been heavily involved in the occultic realm in the areas of reading cards and putting spells on people. When he came to Christ, he repented of that, received forgiveness for all of his sins and presumed he was good to go in this area.
Nothing could have been further from the truth. The reality was that he was still being tormented by demons who talked to him and caused depression and all sorts of physical manifestations to take place in him. He would lose track of time and consciousness, not remembering things he had done or purchase he had made. He would hear voices almost constantly which made it difficult for him to work. The voices were telling him to harm his small daughter. His eyes would roll in his head at different times and it was affecting every area of his life; his wife was extremely worried for her and her daughter’s safety.
When we ministered to him, there were manifestations when we broke curses over him which indicated that even as he was involved in putting curses out against others, there was a spiritual backlash, or curses from others, coming to him. There was a complex history and other open doors to deal with but I believe that the spirits providing most of the torment were there from his “old days” in the occultic realm.
God can and does deliver people sovereignly and supernaturally from spirits and no one has to minister to them. Many people receive deliverance on their own through the practice of extending forgiveness or renouncing certain past sins or vows. However, the reality is that many spirits, like bad company, will linger on even after the doors have seemingly been closed to their legal rights to be there.
In those instances, the deliverance minister, using the power and authority given to him or her in the Word, simply needs to command them to go in Jesus name. It is when there is still an open door, or legal right, for that devil to stay is when the manifestations can get loud and messy! That is why deliverance ministry done at the altar can frequently look like a three ring circus!
